VIENNA ATELIER OF TRADITIONAL ART
DRAWING AND PAINTING FUNDAMENTALS

This weekly class will take place Saturday morning (9:30-12:30), Sunday morning (9:30-12:30) as well as Wednesday evening (17:30-20:30).
Classes are starting from September 9th onwards. Participants will be asked to choose between Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday. It is possible to chose more than one of these options.
We will offer two levels of fees to participate:
1) Fixed-Date-Mode. (5 classes for 200 Euros). Participants pay for five classes with 5 fixed dates agreed upon in advance. Except when giving 3 days' notice that one cannot come, or in case of serious illness supported with a Doctor's attest, the fees are not reimbursed when not attending. Students can expect to be placed in the same position within the atelier from class to class.
2) Flexible mode (5 classes for 275 Euros). Participants pay for five classes without a fixed date. In this case, students are supposed to email us 3 days in advance to confirm that they plan to participate. While we will try to give them the same position within the atelier, this cannot be guaranteed.
Any newcomer can attend just one session for 40 Euros (as a trial) before they join the class.
Course Description.
The class is for beginners and advanced artists, who wish to learn drawing and painting methods or who want to hone their skills in the classical realist tradition. Participants work on their individual projects, and the teacher will thus provide guidance on a one-to-one basis.
Participants will be trained to see and understand the effects of light and shadow, which generates the illusion of form. The essentials of measurement and proportion, block-in -- including the principles of light and dark -- will be emphasized in rendering values and forms.
At the outset, the course will focus on making copies of Charles Bargue lithographs consisting of master drawings. These 2D exercises will help the participants to learn to draw accurately. Once these basic concepts have been acquired , they then proceed to cast drawing and/or painting.
Afterwards, the course will entail the application of the fundamentals of good picture making, from the technical to the conceptual aspects of drawing and painting. Participants can choose from master copies, still life painting or portraiture as their semestral projects. Participants will have the chance to learn about materials, color mixing, medium and solvent usage, grounds, varnishing, and other issues relating to finishing their painting and other best painting practices.
