Cast Drawing and Painting by Andy Nabong  -- Jan-Mar 2020
Cast_Spring_20202_tris.jpg

This class will run 8 Sunday mornings (9:30 AM - 12:30 PM) from 26 January to 15 March 2020. This class is for beginners and advance artist. Everyone works at their own pace. We will follow a classical approach on how to see and understand form. With a drawing cast you have a colorless still standing model which makes it easier to observe the interaction of form and light. We will investigate how to approach an initial linear drawing (block-in) focusing on various methods to ensure accuracy in shape, proportion and gesture. We will then move to modeling form, 3-dimensional, as we discuss the fundamentals on how light works and how to render it onto a 2-dimensional surface. During this process, artists will learn to think sculptural by utilizing a conceptual understanding of how light falls on their cast. This will allow for a greater sense of depth and realism in their finished drawings/paintings.

Bio: Andy studied at The Art Students League and Grand Central Academy, in New York City. He also studied at the Academy of Realist Art in Canada,

Florence Academy of Art in Italy, and in 2019 received a certificate from the Russian Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia. Andy finds inspiration for his paintings and drawings from the tradition of Bouguereau, Velasquez, Rubens, Caravaggio and Rembrandt. He is an active member of the Portrait Society of America. Greg Mortenson

The Munsell Color Wheel Theory by Gregory Mortenson -- Mar 2020

Greg_03_Combined.jpg

This 4-day workshop will take place from 20-23 March 2020 from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. It will study the diversity of human flesh tone, which can be fully expressed within a very narrow range on the color wheel. We will explore the flesh palette as it pertains to that small portion of the Munsell color wheel. On the first day, Greg will help each artist optimize their current color palette by finding the base hue and chroma they currently use. On the second day, with our flesh palettes optimized, students will mix flesh strings and paint several flesh spheres that represent a diverse range of skin tone. Finally, during the final two days of the workshop, we will test our color theory by using the flesh palette to paint alla prima portraits with two vastly different models.

Bio: Gregory Mortenson obtained his art degree at the Southern Virginia University. He studied life drawing & painting with Boston School Painter Patrick Devonas and classical realist William Whitaker. In 2006 he studied with Jacob
