- Description -
In drawing the portrait from a live model we come to observe the human face in ways we may never have done so before. We will explore the anatomy of the skull, consider how to articulate a person's distinct likeness and their expressions through the visual language of art and think about the narrative we want to communicate about our sitter through our art.
We will begin with some quick studies from life to help students think about gesture, structure and proportions. We will then spend the next three days working from a live model seated in a sustained pose. This will allow sufficient time to develop drawing skills further and to think about aspects of drawing such as light, form, anatomical structure, and expression.
We will discuss materials and students who chose to experiment with the “en trois crayons” technique may work in graphite, chalk and sanguine or other toned pencils on toned paper. Students who would prefer to may also use just graphite and chalk.
This class aims to nurture enjoyment and self-confidence in drawing in a structured and supported environment. All levels are welcome. No prior experience is necessary. This workshop will be taught in English.

- Bio -
Laura is an internationally-recognised artist, having exhibited in galleries and museums in New York, Washington D.C., Paris, Barcelona and London, including at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Exhibition, the Portrait Society of America and the Museum of European Modern Art. Laura is fascinated in capturing humanity in its most poignant, fragile and raw form. She explores the beauty and complexity of the human body and the relationship between the surface layers of flesh, bones, muscles and scars with the emotions and lived experiences that lie beneath. Her wish is that through her art she imbues her subjects with a voice to share their stories in a world they so often otherwise go unheard.
