Description:

In this 3,5-day workshop, you will learn the essential skills of painting a self-portrait from the mirror. We will focus on the idea of drawing with paint, creating a convincing light effect and turning form through values and temperature. Guidance will be given to get a good likeness, a better understanding of the human face and a good conceptual understanding of how light works on a three dimensional form. In addition, you will learn proper handling of oil paint and a good approach to the materials used. A step by step approach will be followed that you will be able to use in your personal projects. For better understanding I will be bringing various examples of academically trained artists and I will be painting a demo beside you, as I found that to be a valuable resource for visual learners.

This workshop is open to all levels of experience.

Biography:

Jan Paul Wolff is a German born Austrian painter and multimedia artist trained in the visual arts from the age of 14. At the Florence Academy of Art he received a diploma in 2023 with a perfect score. He is studying traditional oil painting methods of the old masters and tries to get as close as possible to their techniques and understanding of materials and design. Jan Paul is concerned with atmosphere and mood - an essential quality to art, specifically oil painting. He believes by trying to connect to the chain of realist tradition one will be able to reach a wide audience - the viewer will always be able to have an immediate reaction to realism - a known built in psychologically charged visual realm.
